Gary Cherone: Não sabia o que eu estava fazendo, mas eu sabia que deveríamos ficar juntos!

 

 

Declarado sem amargura ou ciúme, Cherone da mesma forma diz que sua união com Bettencourt incorporou um ponto crucial em ambos os destinos. Tocando no circuito de banquetas e cervejas de Boston com o amigo de infância Paul Geary, Cherone conheceu o guitarrista português em um clube, percebeu que eles compartilhavam uma visão musical e concordou em se unir para uma jam session. Entretanto, Cherone descobriu que a Terra não era a única coisa que exercia uma atração gravitacional sobre ele.

"Liguei para o Nuno", relembra ele.

 -Eu vou, não sei o que significa, mas tenho uma sensação muito estranha. Sou um homem heterossexual saudável (risos) mas aconteceu algo.

-Tem de fazer parte da minha banda. (E ele vai.)

 -Mas você nunca me ouviu tocar antes. 

Eu disse:

 -Eu sei e não importa. "

 

"Ele vai confirmar isso. Eu estava falando sério mesmo. Não sabia o que eu estava fazendo, mas eu sabia que deveríamos ficar juntos."

 

O trio tocou com um baixista por um tempo até chamarem o amigo de Bettencourt, Pat Badger, um ano depois e se autodenominar Extreme. A banda rapidamente arrebatou o público da Nova Inglaterra com irreverência e polimento, fortalecido por uma performance física de tal intensidade hercúlea que poderia ter representado a imortalização em uma caixa de weathies. Extreme logo estava ganhando slots de abertura locais com atrações nacionais como Aerosmith, Guns n' Roses, White Lion e Poison. Enquanto se sentiam aos pedaços de cansaço com uma profusão de prêmios locais, incluindo Outstanding Hard Rock / Heavy Metal por dois anos consecutivos Courting A&M Records também foi uma rápida sedução, a banda lhes enviou fitas e apresentou um showcase onde eles assinaram na hora. De repente, seus horizontes tornaram-se ilimitados.

Stated without bitterness or jealousy, Cherone similarly implies that his Union with Bettencourt embodied a pivotal point in both of their destinies. Playing the Boston barstool 'n beer tap circuit with childhood friend Geary, Cherone met the Portuguese guitarist in a club, realized they shared a musical vision and agreed to unite for a jam session in the meantime, however. Cherone discovered that the Earth wasn't the only thing that exerted a gravitational pull on him.

I called Nuno up, he recalls,  "and I go, I don't know what this means but I have a really strange feeling. I am a healthy heterosexual male (laughs) but something has happened. "You've got to join my band" And he goes. "But you have never heard me play before".  I said: "I know and it doesn't matter". He'll attest to this. I was really really serious. I didn't know what I was doing but I knew that we were supposed to be together.

The trio gigged with a long- since departed bass player until inducting Bettencourt's friend, Pat Badger a year later and dubbed themselves Extreme. The band quickly enraptured New England audiences with irreverence and polish for fortified by a physical performance of such Herculean intensity that it could have mented immortalization on a box of weathies. Extreme was soon garnering local opening slots with national attractions like Aerosmith, Guns n' Roses, White Lion and Poison. While feeling them mantel pieces with a profusion of local awards, including Outstanding Hard Rock/Heavy Metal act for two consecutive years Courting A&M records was also a swift seduction the band sent them tapes and presented a showcase where they were signed on the spot. Suddenly their horizons became limitless.
