Gary Cherone: Não deixamos Influências Eternas fazerem efeito na Extreme

 

 

 

"Eu sei que tudo acaba." Cherone diz, sombriamente. "Assim como uma grande carreira esportiva, ela dura apenas por algum tempo e há apenas algumas pessoas que podem ter uma carreira que se estende por mais de 10 anos. Mas você sonha que poderia ser uma delas. Sentimos que se investirmos em nossa música e nossas composições poderíamos ser um deles.Se deixarmos as influências externas fazerem efeito na banda, então seremos uma das vítimas do Rock."

"I know everything ends." Cherone says somberly.  "Just like a great sports career, it only goes on for so long and there's only a few  people who can have careers that span over 10 years. But you dream that you could be one of them. We feel if we put stock in our music and our songwriting we could be one of those. If we let the outside influences take effect on the band then we will be one of the casualties of Rock.".

"Eles eram minha banda favorita e Freddie era meu cantor favorito", exclama Cherone. "Esse deve ser o maior dia de nossas vidas. Foi incrível estar lá e cantando músicas do Queen, já que o Queen significava muito para nós".

"Não quero me colocar em uma categoria com uma banda como o Queen, porque é preciso uma carreira inteira de sucesso para ser classificado com eles." 

Badger interrompe: "Mas queremos incorporar sua filosofia ao que fazemos. Eles evoluíram e mudaram ao longo do tempo e incorporaram muitos estilos diferentes no que faziam."

 "They were my favorite band and Freddie was my favorite singer," Cherone exclaims. "That had to be the biggest day of our lives. It was incredible being there and singing Queen songs, since Queen meant so much to us".

" I don't want to put myself in a category with a band like Queen because it takes a whole career of success to be classified with them." 

Badger interjects: "But we want to incorporate their philosophy into what we do. They evolved and changed throughout time and incorporated a lot of different styles into what they did."

“Eu me pergunto se em nosso gênero musical as bandas acham que não podem ir além das fronteiras de escrever sobre sexo, drogas e rock and roll”, contrapõe Cherone. "Os caras com quem cresci, como Pete Townsend e Alice Cooper, me ensinaram que você pode escrever sobre qualquer coisa. "I wonder if in our genre of music the bands think they can't go beyond the borders of writing about sex, drugs and rock and roll", Cherone counters. "The guys I grew up with, like Pete Townsend and Alice Cooper taught me that you can write about anything. Unless I am inspired by something or I have done some research on it, I won't write about it usually, the songs that come out are the ones I'm personally affected by, and I try to write them in a general way so everyone can relate to them."

As letras não convencionais de Cherone substanciam a aventura musical da banda em Peacemaker Die e permanecem consistentemente distintas durante todo o álbum.

Cherone's unconventional lyrics substantiate the band's musical adventurousness in Peacemaker Die and remain  consistently distinctive throughout the entire álbum. "Well, you are what you eat", laughs Badger as he provides his perspective on Cherone's writing,  "and I've walked into his hotel room many times and found him staring at CNN. Gary is pretty conscious of the things that are going on in the world. Some people are only into partying and drinking, so that's all they'll write and sing about Gary's a little more ambitious than that.

Em nossos últimos dois álbuns, o material foi bem diverso. Comentários de Badger. "e os climas variariam de música para música. Desta vez, nós os categorizamos lado a lado, de modo que o primeiro lado seja mais pesado (contendo o primeiro single Rest in peace), o segundo é mais pop e coisas do tipo balada e o terceiro lado incorpora a orquestra ".

Cherone descreve como a música evoluiu: É um editorial sobre como extinguimos todas as pessoas boas do mundo. Amostramos o discurso de Martin Luther King nele e tivemos que obter permissão do estado para usá-lo. Acabei tendo que falar com o filho dele, Dexter King, e estava muito nervoso. Passei o dia inteiro sem comer, esperando ligar para ele às 16h. E ele acabou sendo muito humilde, um homem muito bom, e acabamos conversando por cerca de 45 minutos. Ele nos deu permissão, então eu me aproximei muito dessa música por causa disso. "

On our past two albums, de material has been pretty diverse.  Badger comments. "and the moods would vary from song to song. This time we categorized them by side, so that the first side is more the heavy stuff (containing the first single Rest in peace), the second is more The poppy and ballad-type stuff and the third side incorporates the orquestra".

Another dramatic element was the inclusion of  a segment of the powerful Martin Luther King Jr.  "I have a dream" speech into Peacemaker Die. Cherone describes how the song evolved: It's an editorial on how we extinguish all of the good people in the world. We sampled Martin Luther King's speech in it and we had to get permission to use it from the state. I ended up having to talk to his son , Dexter King, and I was so nervous.  I spent the whole day not eating, waiting to call him at 4 pm. And he turned out to be very humble, a very nice man, and we ended up talking for about 45 minutes. He gave us permission so I've grown very close to that song because of that."

O conceito de três lados evoluiu quando a banda descobriu que o material acumulado para o novo lançamento totalizava 77 minutos. The three side concept evolved when the band discovered that the material amassed for the new release totalled 77 minutes. Since their recordings are still distributed on vinyl in some parts  of the globe, those 77 minutes translated into three album sides and into three neal stylistic groupings (although Cherone wryly contends. "On this record, there are more than three sides to Extreme.)

 Extreme é como uma entidade formidável. É articulado musicalmente e liricamente, seu conteúdo socialmente consciente e intelectualmente evoluído abrange três "lados", abrangendo tudo, desde comentários sobre guerra, política, discriminação racial e lares desfeitos a várias canções de amor estranhamente charmosas e a magnum opus da banda: Everything under the Sun, uma composição de três movimentos acompanhada por uma orquestra de 75 músicos.

-“Incorporar uma orquestra em nossa música foi algo que nunca havíamos tentado antes”. - Badger diz entusiasmado. Extreme as a formidable entity. It is articulate musically and lyrically it's socially-aware and intellectually-evolved content encompasses three "sides" spanning everything from commentaries on war, politics, racial discrimination and broken homes to several quaintly charming love songs to the band's magnum opus Everything under the Sun, a three movement composition accompanied by a 75 piece orchestra.

"Incorporating an orchestra into our music was something we had never attempted before".  

 Badger says excitedly. "It's the first time we've done something that ambitious and it went beyond all of our expectations." Nuno had always dreamt of actually having an orchestra play on our record. Having known some of the guys in Queen. We hooked up with Mike Moran, who had done all of the Orchestration on Freddie Mercury's Barcelona record. He put together a 75 piece orchestra and we went into Abbey Road Studios and recorded with them. I still literally get chills when I listen to it."

 

 

 

Gary Cherone: Não sabia o que eu estava fazendo, mas eu sabia que deveríamos ficar juntos!

 

 

Declarado sem amargura ou ciúme, Cherone da mesma forma diz que sua união com Bettencourt incorporou um ponto crucial em ambos os destinos. Tocando no circuito de banquetas e cervejas de Boston com o amigo de infância Paul Geary, Cherone conheceu o guitarrista português em um clube, percebeu que eles compartilhavam uma visão musical e concordou em se unir para uma jam session. Entretanto, Cherone descobriu que a Terra não era a única coisa que exercia uma atração gravitacional sobre ele.

"Liguei para o Nuno", relembra ele.

 -Eu vou, não sei o que significa, mas tenho uma sensação muito estranha. Sou um homem heterossexual saudável (risos) mas aconteceu algo.

-Tem de fazer parte da minha banda. (E ele vai.)

 -Mas você nunca me ouviu tocar antes. 

Eu disse:

 -Eu sei e não importa. "

 

"Ele vai confirmar isso. Eu estava falando sério mesmo. Não sabia o que eu estava fazendo, mas eu sabia que deveríamos ficar juntos."

 

O trio tocou com um baixista por um tempo até chamarem o amigo de Bettencourt, Pat Badger, um ano depois e se autodenominar Extreme. A banda rapidamente arrebatou o público da Nova Inglaterra com irreverência e polimento, fortalecido por uma performance física de tal intensidade hercúlea que poderia ter representado a imortalização em uma caixa de weathies. Extreme logo estava ganhando slots de abertura locais com atrações nacionais como Aerosmith, Guns n' Roses, White Lion e Poison. Enquanto se sentiam aos pedaços de cansaço com uma profusão de prêmios locais, incluindo Outstanding Hard Rock / Heavy Metal por dois anos consecutivos Courting A&M Records também foi uma rápida sedução, a banda lhes enviou fitas e apresentou um showcase onde eles assinaram na hora. De repente, seus horizontes tornaram-se ilimitados.

Stated without bitterness or jealousy, Cherone similarly implies that his Union with Bettencourt embodied a pivotal point in both of their destinies. Playing the Boston barstool 'n beer tap circuit with childhood friend Geary, Cherone met the Portuguese guitarist in a club, realized they shared a musical vision and agreed to unite for a jam session in the meantime, however. Cherone discovered that the Earth wasn't the only thing that exerted a gravitational pull on him.

I called Nuno up, he recalls,  "and I go, I don't know what this means but I have a really strange feeling. I am a healthy heterosexual male (laughs) but something has happened. "You've got to join my band" And he goes. "But you have never heard me play before".  I said: "I know and it doesn't matter". He'll attest to this. I was really really serious. I didn't know what I was doing but I knew that we were supposed to be together.

The trio gigged with a long- since departed bass player until inducting Bettencourt's friend, Pat Badger a year later and dubbed themselves Extreme. The band quickly enraptured New England audiences with irreverence and polish for fortified by a physical performance of such Herculean intensity that it could have mented immortalization on a box of weathies. Extreme was soon garnering local opening slots with national attractions like Aerosmith, Guns n' Roses, White Lion and Poison. While feeling them mantel pieces with a profusion of local awards, including Outstanding Hard Rock/Heavy Metal act for two consecutive years Courting A&M records was also a swift seduction the band sent them tapes and presented a showcase where they were signed on the spot. Suddenly their horizons became limitless.
